John Hathaway is a global development, real estate and construction executive experienced in every facet of the commercial real estate industry. John launched his career as Director of Development for Coldwater Creek, where he was involved in developing the retailer’s initial design and roll-out strategy for brick and mortar stores.
At Cinemark, John was quickly promoted from Director to Vice President of Real Estate Development overseeing expansion into Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Orchestrating everything from establishing regional joint ventures to initial site selection and negotiation and execution of anchor-tenant retail leases, John put 450 new theatre screens in 15 countries and over the course of his tenure helped spur 245% growth in Cinemark’s pre-tax earnings.
In 2007, John was recruited to overhaul Real Estate operations, construction management, and team culture at Hanger, a billion-dollar healthcare firm with 1,200+ medical, administrative, warehouse, and manufacturing facilities in the US, Mexico, and Asia. John built a global team laser-focused on customer service which over the next 8 years would locate, build, and open 480 new facilities and turn Real Estate into one of Hanger’s most efficient, collaborative, and respected shared services organizations.
In 2015, 84 Lumber recruited John to build its Development organization from the ground up. During his tenure John assembled and directed a staff of 21 real estate and construction professionals tasked with implementing 84 Lumber’s $200M national expansion initiative. John’s department was responsible for the national land acquisition strategy, the maintenance, repair, and construction programs, and all associated entitlement efforts including wetland delineations, rail access, erosion control, and site, grading, and building permits.
In addition to his leadership at 84 Lumber, John led all capital planning and project management for the company’s subsidiary interest – a 2,000-acre, 320-room golf, spa, and ski resort located in the Laurel Highlands of SW Pennsylvania. The opportunity to shepherd the growth of this 5-star resort rounded out John’s CRE experience to include the hospitality sector, further cementing him as a true ‘360 degree’ leader within his industry.
When not in the office, you’ll find John playing the saxophone on jam nights at local music venues, speaking three languages, writing novels, fly fishing, or alpine skiing. John earned his B.S. in International Business from Willamette University, and his MBA from the University of Texas.
